Frequently Asked Questions

What is tweetSMS?
As of Thursday 14th August, Twitter announced that they will no longer be sending Direct Messages by SMS to customers outside of the USA, Canada or India. Whilst it is true that many users are now mobile-web enabled, SMS is still the most heavily used and accessible form of text messaging available. tweetSMS aims to provide a third-party service for Twitter users, enabling them to once-again receive direct message updates from Twitter.
Why are you creating this service?
As Twitter users ourselves, we understand the frustrations of not receiving SMS updates from Twitter. After all, even web-based services don’t provide the best updates for users on the go, especially when high-speed data access is not available. Furthermore, data access charges can be considerably higher than standard SMS messages in many European countries.
Will it cost me anything?
The reason for dropping SMS support for international users was due to high operational costs. To receive updates of your twitter account via SMS, you will be required to pay a small fee. However, this is likely to be at a fraction of the cost of a standard text message.
There are plans to offer a free ad-based alternative, but we can't give any current timescale for this. Register your interest and we'll be sure to let you know when this is available.
Will tweetSMS be available in my country?
tweetSMS is already available in over 190 countries. We are continuing to search for ways to provide this service to as many countries as possible
Who is behind tweetSMS?
The service is being constructed by a group of new-media designers and developers in the United Kingdom, headed by Stasis Media. The team has worked with numerous direct SMS projects in the past which will allow us to develop one of the most feature-rich sites available.
